TLDR:  I wanted to show Midnight Heart’s spell braking and decided a good way to do that was to show the pony she was impersonating fading away from her actual form. I specifically chose a pegasis mare because it contrasted well with her unicorn form, the added appendages making it obvious that something is amiss. After a wonderful night at a town fair, Juris and Midnight lose track of time and as the sun rises, Midnight’s spell brakes just as words that must never be said are spoken. “I love you” has never rung so tragically in the ears of these ponies.

I put way too much thought into the back story behind this image. There is surely something wrong with me. But hey, if you give a rabid fangirl a compliment, then she’ll throw a glass of crazy in your face.

Rarity is elected to host the 1^st annual Hearts and Hooves day Charity Ball in Ponyville. In her wisdom, she decides to create an auction selling off dates with the most eligible stallions and mares in town. Juris agrees to join the auction, hoping Rarity will bid on him. She, however, has her sights set on somepony else. Instead, Juris finds himself bought up by a striking and vibrant Pegasus mare. Still determined to have a good time at the charity ball, Juris shows the Pegasus a fun evening. The two have a wonderful time dancing, talking, and enjoying the fair style booths and games. They end up basking in each other’s company late into the night.

However, as night stretches into the early hours of morning, Juris starts to get a lingering feeling that he knows this pony from somewhere. He becomes more and more certain of this as time marches on, but not with exactly that face. They become increasingly in sync, picking up on each other’s likes, moods, desires, with almost instinctive swiftness and clarity, as though they’d done this so many times before. An affection that contradicts a single night’s rondevous melts into the couple’s hearts, demanding acknowledgement, demanding a voice…

And then the sun begins to rise.

Love, love love the angsty story written along with this gorgeous image. So flipping tragic, and I do so love tragic.

I don’t really believe in the “love at first sight” trope. It’s dull anyway. However, I adore the idea of Midnight Heart slowly, over time, becoming more and more attracted to Juris with each encounter she has with him. I find it equally interesting that maybe, even if he doesn’t consciously know it, Juris becomes more find of her. Perhaps gaining a Pavlovian response to her scent or the feel of her magic as it creeps over him, associating it with the pleasure and heat of the encounters they’ve had but that he has forgotten because of Midnight’s spell. However, muscle-memory and scent-memory are tricky things and not so easily eraced.

Anyway, if Midnight ever let herself get swept away one evening with Juris, and forgets that as the moon wanes, so dose her power, and the spell is broken in the horrible moment her own emotions threaten to demand acknowledgment, the heartbreaking agony of that moment. Skies above, the deliciousness of that angst is just too good!
